Monthly Play Reading – November 2024
This month in our Monthly Play Readings we are featuring Australian Playwright, Jack Hibberd.
Join us as we take a look into this playfully offensive script. The wedding reception from hell is acted out in Dimboola, a play that joyfully takes a well-known custom and wildly flips it on its head. It is both a celebration and a satire!

The Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen’s Guild Dramatic Society Murder Mystery: Murder at Checkmate Manor
Although things can go wrong on opening night of a community theatre
production. In the case of the BATS latest production of The Farndale
Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen’s Guild Dramatic Society Murder
Mystery nearly everything does…but intentionally. This play highlights
the crucial importance of props, cues, appropriate set construction
and line delivery, sound and lighting effects and timing, particularly
of entrances and exits for the cast. Ignoring one or more of any of
the above (let alone all of them) can quickly spell disaster for a
production.
However, the hands of Director Julian White and the BATS cast, crew
and set builders the assured and intentional mayhem, which is the
essence of the play, is pure slapstick gold, guaranteeing audience
members a delicious evening of utmost hilarity and mirth. ‘Just when
you are finished laughing, hold on, because there is more to come,’
said Mr White.

Towards Zero by Agatha Christie
The classic murder mystery is coming to Buderim!
When a house party gathers at Gull’s Point, the seaside home of Lady Tressilian, Neville Strange finds himself caught between his old wife Audrey and his new flame Kay. A nail-biting thriller set in the 1950’s, Agatha Christie’s ‘Towards Zero’ probes the psychology of jealousy in the shadow of a savage and brutal murder. A carefully unpeeled investigation before our eyes brings the story to a pointed ending.
The Power of a Cultured Person
In February 2022 BATS produced the highly successful, ‘The Power of a Cultured Person’, which was a celebration of women of various cultural backgrounds living on the Sunshine Coast, telling their stories through song, dance, plays and monologues. In January 2024, we will be once more be celebrating cultural diversity on the Sunshine Coast; this time telling the stories of females and males, through song, dance, music and stories.
